Superman helps you Learn Spanish with Translated Trailers

There are many different ways to practice Spanish, and even more if you are open to explore creative alternatives that leverage interesting topics.

Today we will take a look at the versions in Spanish and English of the movie trailers from the “Man of Steel”, the latest version of the Superman story.

This is the recommended sequence:

First, you play the trailer in English so you know what the characters are saying.

Second, you play the trailer in Spanish and try to understand as much as possible even if you get lost in a few sections (don’t worry about the details, just try to get as much as you can).

Third, you play the trailer in Spanish one more time and scroll down to read the transcript in both English and Spanish. Make sure you pause and rewind as much as needed in order to understand what is being said in the Spanish version of the trailer.

The last step of this exercise is to play the Spanish version of the trailer one more time without reading the transcript in Spanish in order to comprehend what the characters say in the video. If you can’t understand everything, take a moment to go back and read the transcripts one more time until you understand it all without reading.

Read it to get started? Here are the two versions of the trailer:

Man of Steel – Official Trailer 3 – Trailer in English

Hombre de Acero – Trailer in Spanish

Here are the transcripst (First in English, and then in Spanish):

Goodbye my son.

Adiós hijo mío.

Our hopes and dreams travel with you.

Nuestros sueños y esperanzas viajan contigo.

He’ll be on outcast, they’ll kill him.

Será un marginado, lo matarán.

No, he will be a god to them.

No, será un dios para ellos.

What if a child dreamed of becoming something other than what society had intended.

What if a child aspired to something greater.

My son was in the bus, he saw what Clark did.

You’re the answer son,

Es la respuesta hijo,

You are the answer to: are we alone in the universe?

Can I just keep pretending I’m your son?

Y no puedo, ¿sólo fingir ser tu hijo?

You are my son.

Eres mi hijo.

I have to believe that you were sent here for a reason.

And even if it takes the rest of your life,

Y aún si se toma el resto de tu vida,

You owe it to yourself to find out what that reason is.

Es tu deber averiguar cuál es esa razón.

How do you find someone who has spent a lifetime covering his tracks?

For some, he was a Guardian Angel,

Para algunos, fue un Ángel Guardián,

For others a ghost, who never quite fit in.

You will give the people of Earthan ideal to strive towards.

They will rise behind you, they will stumble, they will fall.

Y te seguirán, tropezarán, y fracasarán.

But in time, they will join you in the sun.

In time you will help them accomplish wonders.

You believe your son is safe?

¿Crees que tu hijo está a salvo?

I will find him.

Lo voy a encontrar.

My father believed that if the world found out who I really was, it would reject me.

He was convinced that the world wasn’t ready.

What do you think?

¿Tú qué opines?

What does the S stand for?

¿Qué significa la S?

It’s not an S.

No es una S.

On my world, it means hope.

En mi mundo, significa esperanza.

Well here, it’s an S.

Bueno aquí, es una S.

How about.. super…

Qué tal… super…

Excuse me?

Perdón?
